Classical Indian
Dance
Classical dance forms are based on detailed rules and systematised
sequences of movements to a large extent.
In India there are several classical dance styles, such as:

Kathak: Belongs
to North India and emphasises the telling of stories with the
help of mime and body technique. |
|
|
Bharatanatyam:
The major South Indian dance style, derives its name from Bharata's
Natya Sastra, the ancient hard book on dance and drama. It is
a stylised dance using much gesture (Mudra) language. |
|
|
Kathakali:
A classical dance drama from South India (Kerala) using elaborate
head-dress and painted make-up. Traditionally performed by men
only. |

Mohiniattam:
A solo dance from Kerala performed by women using technique
of Bharatanatyam and Kathakali. |
|
|
Manipuri:
A very graceful dance style from manipur, in the North-East
of India.Odissi/Orissi: Very stylised dance form, borrowing
from the famous sculptures of Orissa state. |

Kuchipudi:
A classical dance-drama sometimes performed as female solo dance,
from Kuchipudi village in Andhra-Pradesh. |
